About Celiac Sprue

Complications and Associated Conditions

Untreated or poorly controlled Celiac Sprue can result in a variety of complications. These complications can be present in the absence of gastrointestinal symptoms.

  • Anemia due to iron, folate, or vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Decreased bone density (osteopenia, osteoporosis, fractures) due to calcium or vitamin D deficiency
  • Blood clotting dysfunction due to vitamin K deficiency
  • Dental enamel defects
  • Growth delay
  • Delayed puberty
  • Hepatitis
  • Infertility
  • Miscarriage
  • Neurologic problems such as neuropathy, seizures, balance disorders

Certain diseases or conditions occur in greater frequency in Celiac patients than in the general population. These include certain autoimmune diseases and genetic disorders such as:

  • Type 1 Diabetes
  • Autoimmune Thyroid Disease
  • Sjogren's Syndrome
  • Primary Billiary Cirrhosis
  • Down Syndrome
  • Turner Syndrome
  • Williams Syndrome
  • Selective IgA Antibody Deficiency
